Which White is Right?

White is probably the most used colour within people’s homes in New Zealand, and why not? It is the most classic choice acting as a blank canvas to all the rest of your design decisions and chosen furnishings.

Really, I don’t think you can go wrong with White… or can you?

I often get asked ‘what White do you think I should use in my home?’ and I am always apprehensive to give advice without seeing the space.

There are so many different types of White to choose from in the colour fan, but how do you make sure that the neutral colour is right for your space?

Here are a few tips and things to consider:

  • How much natural light is in the space? This will help determine how warm or cool your white tone can be. A pure white looks best with a lot of natural white, and a warm white or more pigmented white is a good choice for low light spaces.

  • What flooring are you matching it with?

  • Use one colour of White throughout the home to make it consistent and easier to track when touching up.

  • Keep in mind that your furnishings will affect your perception of any paint. In review of your furnishing colour palette, if they’re warm colours, you’ll want to lean toward whites with warm-coloured undertones like pink, orange, red and yellow. If they’re cool, consider cool whites with undertones of blue, purple, or green.

  • For me it is super important to test before selecting your final paint. Paint a large piece of gib or card and place in both the brightest and the darkest rooms of your house. Look at it in the daylight and also in the artificial light to make sure you are happy with the colour.

  • Select a few different whites to test out!
